Description
This project is integrated in the construction of a second paper machine whose goal was to duplicate the installed capacity and to make Soporcel the shareholder of 10% of the European fine-paper market (300 M€ total investment).
Critical Software intervenes as IS/IT partner since 1998, developing and reshaping the Manufacturing Execution System, restructuring computer networks and communications infrastructure, developing industrial machine interfaces, implementing contingency and disaster-recovery plans, intranet and extranet development, IGPS system - integrated information retrieval from Portucel/Soporcel Group, maintenance services, among others.

Description
Companhia Papel do Prado is the Iberian leader in fine card production. Critical Software intervenes as IS/IT partner conceiving and developing the industrial information system, integrating and/or substituting some of the existing sub-systems.
Some modules of the Manufacturing Execution System are already in use, and the development is still running. The Customer Claim Module is just shipping and is expected to go under use 2nd quarter 2003.

Description
Revigrés is a leader in the floor ceramics industry in Portugal. Critical Software intervenes as information technology partner to develop its industrial information system.
As a first step, Critical has developed an information system to the quality control laboratories of Revigrés, which can be thoroughly configured, namely, defining tests and their parameters, and emitting quality certificates.
Revigrés is planning to spread information systems technology to the whole of its industrial plants environment, namely, developing the future Manufacturing Execution System. First fase of this project is intended to start 2nd quarter 2003.

Description
Fapricela is a wire drawing industry leader, one of the few worldwide producers of suspension bridge cables. Critical Software intervenes as information technology partner to strategic planning of its information system.
As a demonstration project, Critical has developed an information system to the quality control laboratories of Fapricela, which can be thoroughly configured, namely, defining tests and their parameters, and emitting quality certificates.
At present, Critical is just finishing the production control module of Fapricela Manufacturing Execution System, which enables the calculation of production costs, manage warehouses, control production efficiency, make production and prognostic consumptions planning, among other functionality.
Next stages will soon go under development, as soon this module enters cruise speed exploration.

Description
The Intranet Soporcel is aimed at the integration of company’s information and workers’ information, and to provide a set of functionalities as Web services, as a means to improve efficiency.
On the Intranet any worker will be able to find the information related to himself, as vacations or other information concerning to his or her department, in a controlled manner.
There is also available some company information in real time about production, internal newspapers, internal guides, phone list, and day-by-day information.
The Intranet is under constant evolution, being recently added two additional modules: a canteen management module and a content management module. The latter is responsible for all content publishing in the Intranet.

Description
Almedina is one of the leading Law Publishers in Portugal. Critical Software designed and is presently implementing an information system to provide easy access through the internet to wide spread law information, including: the Portuguese Official Journal (Diário da República), law bulletins, law codes, law books, among other sources. Main challenges in this project concern the automatic retrieval, pre-processing, and archive of unstructured law information from several sources, typically cross related and in multiple formats.
The system comprises applications to convert the semi-structured input information (such as pdf, html, plain text, etc.) in highly structured XML in an near fully automatic way. The generated XML information is then imported to a relational, fully normalized database that can provide high accuracy query results as well as value added information through legal relationship and annotation of its contents.
The system also comprises applications to help legal technicians to search, edit and establish relations in the huge amount of data involved. This database was released to the public via web 1st quarter 2004.

Description
Biotecnol is a research based biotechnology company. Founded in 1997, it has been at the forefront of biotechnology in Portugal. The company has built a technology platform based on novel approaches for recombinant protein expression in the bacterium Escherichia coli (E.coli).
The project, BioOpt, applies linear optimization and polyhedral analysis for modeling of metabolic networks. The models enable interpretation and prediction of cellular behavior under different environmental conditions, given a fixed genetic background, or interpretation and prediction of cellular behavior under a different genetic background, given fixed environmental conditions.
Belonging to the field of bio-informatics, the project BioOpt combines biotechnology, mathematical modelling and software engineering. The participation of Critical Software in the project provided the necessary expertise in the two latter fields.

Description
In this project, Critical has defined the full specification for a Java (J2EE) Software Development Process for all applications developed using that technology at Soporcel.
In the project’s scope was also the design, implementation and documentation of a multi-platform application framework, built of components such as:

A “hands-on-job” training period was also considered for the framework, where Soporcel technicians, monitored by Critical Software, applied the developed work for the creation of Java applications.

Description
The Extranet for Portucel Soporcel Group is a marketing and sales tools, developed to allow conditioned access to their information systems’ data, integrated in the high quality serviced provided to their customers.
It was developed based in the existing business processes at the Portucel Soporcel Group using real time information, providing functionality based on different client relationship aspects, such as:
- Views
- Orders
- Expeditions
- Document printings (invoices, credit and debit notes, guides, etc.)
- Claims administrative support
- Purchase statistical analysis
It was also developed an Extranet functionality subset to work in PDA equipments, named mXnet. With this application, the Portucel Soporcel Group’s commercial workforce can access in real time the data generated by the group’s information systems, interacting directly with the customer based on that information.

PORTUCEL SOPORCEL SYSTEM OPTIMIZATION

Description
Soporcel is a national leader in fine paper production, with a 10% European market share. Critical Software has been Soporcel’s technological partner in the IS/IT area, since 1998, mainly responsible for technological consulting and application development at several levels – essentially automatic interfacing, MIS (Millwide Information Systems), Intranet and application integration.
The acquisition/merger process taking place at the present moment between Portucel and Soporcel (a total turnover of 1500 M€) led to the project of integrating both companies' information systems. This integration project relies on an ETL process with data sources geographically scattered throughout the country and the reporting component located in the group’s integrated data.
The objective of this optimization project was to identify the break points in performance and to improve performance throughout the system. An optimization methodology developed internally at Critical Software and tested on various clients and in several projects was applied to this group.
This project led to an improvement in performance of 300% in the ETL process following restructuring and about 400% in the reporting component achieved by optimizing the data base and the SQL produced by the application.

SOPORCEL PORTUCEL SI INTEGRATION

Description
IGPS is a long-term project for integration of the management information systems of two major European companies of Pulp&Paper Industry (Portucel S.A. and Soporcel S.A). Portucel and Soporcel recently merged operations, forming a company with a turnover in excess of 1500 M€. Critical Software is a TI/SI partner and major responsible for the integration project aimed at integrating the information systems of both companies.
The integration is being conducted using the J2EE model as a reference and mainly open-source tools and platforms.
The major system components include: a Soporcel driver module responsible for data acquisition from Soporcel; a Portucel driver module, responsible for data acquisition from Portucel; the Integration Layer, responsible for data conversions (e.g. code mapping, xml/others) from Soporcel and Portucel to the IGPS data; the Business Layer, containing all business logic common to both companies; and the Presentation Layer containing all the logic for the user interface.
