Critical takes part in Portuguese technical consortium for electric mobility

1 Jul 2009

Electric mobility presents a paradigm shift concerning new models for sustainability, thereby creating a novel area encompassing multiple competences, and promoting the convergence of several technological domains, notably with respect to electrical components, information and communication systems, product development, among others.

As a result of the Portuguese industry's mobilization efforts around the theme of electric mobility, and benefitting from the national government's institutional support, Critical Software together with other Portuguese companies have formed a consortium that has taken the lead in the definition of a technical framework for the development and implementation of a full-scale solution for a 100% Portugal-based EV charging and support infrastructure.

From charging points (slow and fast) and their smart interaction with the electric grid to advanced communications, management and aggregated billing, the entire system has been developed with a focus on the citizen, allowing systematic integration of the economic, energy and environmental dimensions linked to each user's mobility. Critical Software's active contribution to the solution dealt with the:

  • Real-time management of the grid charging stations;
  • Secure data exchange between the infrastructure and the company responsible for the management of the grid;
  • The ability to select different electricity providers at the charging station;
  • Remote monitoring of the charging process;
  • Visualization of the charging stations geo-location and the status of the grid;
  • Information management between the charging station and the electricity provider;
  • The possibility of incorporating bi-directionality between vehicle and Grid (Vehicle2Grid).

Representing a collection of well-established and internationally recognizable technical know-how in complementary areas, the consortium has been seeking a disruptive approach to electrical mobility, placing itself on the forefront of thought in the definition of novel e-mobility frameworks and technological innovation. The goal is to take advantage of the great economic potential presented by an emerging business area, by promoting value-adding national solutions, which are inherently export-oriented and leading to the creation of skilled employment and a significant multiplier effect on the Portuguese economy.

This technological solution was designed and developed with the foreseeable technological advancements in mind, seeking to permanently adapt and include market-based innovation, both from a technical and business perspective. In addition, the consortium has followed the existing trends in charging and communication standards while attempting to meet the expectations and needs demanded by different automotive manufacturers, especially Nissan.

Critical Software and the consortium are deeply committed to strengthen the global technical leadership potential presented by the Portuguese Industry.
